Description

Behind every face is a story—and every story is shaped by the people who cross our path.

In He Was There All the Time, journalist Nick Hoffman reflects on a life marked by hardship, grace, and the quiet influence of ordinary people who changed everything. From a childhood shaken by divorce to struggles with alcoholism, from small-town Pennsylvania to a life transformed by faith, Hoffman discovers that no journey is truly walked alone.

Drawing on decades as a newspaper writer and editor, Hoffman weaves together personal memories, moving portraits of mentors and neighbors, and moments of spiritual awakening. Teachers, friends, veterans, pastors, family members, and strangers appear in these pages—each leaving a mark on the author’s life and revealing the unseen threads that connect us all.

At its heart, this is a story about redemption: how broken paths can lead to healing, how faith can emerge in unexpected places, and how the right person at the right moment can change a life forever.

Honest, heartfelt, and deeply human, He Was There All the Time reminds us that even when we feel lost, we are never truly alone.

Nick Hoffman

Nick Hoffman is a longtime journalist and editor who spent more than three decades working at a daily newspaper in Pennsylvania, where he chronicled the lives, struggles, and triumphs of the people in his community. A graduate of Penn State University, he began his career as a sportswriter before serving as bureau news manager, city editor, and eventually managing editor.

Raised in the rural town of Brockway, Pennsylvania, Hoffman grew up surrounded by family members, teachers, coaches, and neighbors whose quiet example left a lasting impact on his life. His early adulthood included a difficult battle with alcoholism that culminated in two DUI convictions before he found sobriety in 1992 at Valley Hope Association in Norton, Kansas. The experience sparked a spiritual transformation that deepened his commitment to faith, humility, and service.

After leaving the newspaper in 2014, Hoffman became community initiatives coordinator for Varischetti Holdings in Brockway.

Blending memoir with reflections inspired by decades of reporting, Hoffman writes about ordinary people whose lives reveal extraordinary grace.

He Was There All the Time is his first book.
