Description

In the age before smartphones and instant messages, a series of dots and dashes connected entire communities.

Beechworth’s Telegraph tells the remarkable story of how a small Victorian town became part of a revolutionary communication network that changed Australia forever. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, Leo Nette brings to life the early days of the Electric Telegraph Station in Beechworth—its construction, the pioneering operators who worked there, and the dramatic messages that passed through its wires.

From the excitement of instant news travelling across colonies to the quiet dedication of the “Morsecode men” who kept the lines alive, this richly illustrated history reveals how telegraphy transformed everyday life. Messages carried joy, tragedy, wartime news, and vital information that connected Beechworth to Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and beyond.

Drawing on archival records, photographs, and local stories, Nette recreates a fascinating chapter of Australian communication history.

Beechworth’s Telegraph is both a tribute to the people behind the wires and a reminder of the technology that laid the foundations for the modern connected world.
