Description

Born in a small town in Malaya during the dark days of the Japanese occupation, Lin’s life begins with fear, resilience, and a mother’s determination to survive in the jungle. From these humble beginnings grows an extraordinary journey across continents, cultures, and decades.

In My Memories, Dr. Lin Shanahan recounts her remarkable life—from helping on her family’s farm and studying by sheer determination, to becoming one of the first female agriculturalists in Malaysia. Her curiosity and ambition carry her far beyond Pekan: to universities in France, adventures across Europe and America, and a career that bridges science, language, and diplomacy.

Along the way she meets unforgettable people, witnesses historic moments, and embraces a world of opportunity—from hitchhiking through Europe to studying linguistics at the Sorbonne, working in New York, and ultimately building a new life in Australia with her husband and family.

Warm, candid, and often surprising, My Memories is a vivid testament to courage, education, and the power of curiosity. It is the story of a woman who refused to be limited by circumstance and instead turned her life into a journey across the world.
