About the Book
What if you discovered you had a secret power? This enchanting middle-grade novel reveals the strengths that lie in our differences. Being half bird and half fish, Staraku has never fit in. But when she leaves her home in search of a place to belong, she discovers a guide on a mysterious island who teaches her about a power she never knew she had.

Dee DeLoy
Beginning his artistic journey in the mid-70s, Dee DeLoy first honed his skills sketching caricatures in Disney’s Contemporary Hotel and fabricating sets for EPCOT. With a passion for illustration and cartooning, DeLoy later started his freelance art business, Newstart Art. In this venture, he grew a successful career in caricaturing for large companies. He also won many awards for his paper sculptures, two of which he created for the Roy and Walt Disney rooms on Disney’s cruise boat, the Wonder. His other works include murals, children’s books, illustrations, and graphic recording. Most recently, DeLoy’s artwork accompanying the book, The Watchmaker’s Daughter, won “Best of Show” at Central Florida Lifestyle’s 2023 Art Contest. His painting portrayed Corrie Ten Boom, a WWII heroine who, along with her family, saved over 800 Jews from the Nazis by concealing them within the walls of their home. DeLoy pursued a Graphic Design and Illustration education at Florida Technological University (now UCF). He’s passionate about art that tells important stories and makes people laugh.

“Being an educator who works with intercultural students, I believe The Birdfish and the Secret of Crystal Island will help kids identify their own challenges and find value in their uniqueness." —Rebekah Sharp, International Educator
Review
“Young readers will be delighted by this story of Staraku, a courageous, small Birdfish who runs away from her problems only to meet friends who help her discover her power to face them. This story also helps parents talk to their kids about the challenges they face in our changing society. As a storyteller and author, I was captivated. As a former children's literature instructor, I will be recommending this to teachers!” —Janyne McConnaughey, PhD, Trauma-Informed Author & Advocate, Author of the Brave Series
