Description

Has your child ever been told to 'keep a secret' and you wondered if they'd know when to speak up?

Awarded the Anna Lindh Foundation “Reading Here There and Everywhere” illustration prize.

Maya Knows a Secret is a playful social-emotional learning story that gently introduces the difference between harmless secrets and secrets that should always be shared with a trusted adult. A wonderful conversation-starter for families and educators about the delicate subject of secrets and safety.

Maya sets off on an exciting search for someone to tell her a secret. When she finally discovers a hush-hush secret of her own, like all children, Maya now faces a tricky question: Keep quiet… or speak up?

This book will help your child:

  • Spot the difference between good secrets and unsafe secrets
  • Feel confident to speak up and ask for help when something doesn’t feel right
  • Build trust with caring adults at home and at school
  • Develop critical thinking around safety and choices

This book is wonderful for:

  • Children beginning to navigate social situations independently
  • Families and classrooms opening conversations about body safety and trusted adults

Perfect for ages 3–8: bedtime, read-aloud time, and classrooms (SEL - social emotional learning)

BONUS ACTIVITY: Good secret or bad secret? Play the guessing game… Shhhh!

The illustrations are adorable and colorful making the concept palpable. The topic is fresh and original. A great story for read aloud sessions in classrooms and bedtime storytelling. The story is simple but satisfies the curiosity of children when it comes to grasping the concept of a secret, and Maya makes it easy for them to understand it perfectly.
