The Chinese Market
The Book Publishing industry has recorded strong growth over the past five years. Industry revenue is expected to increase at an annualized 5.0% over the five years through 2024, to $19.8 billion.
Culture, science, education, and sports books are the largest product segment. This segment is expected to account for 50.0% of industry revenue in 2024.
Short-video e-commerce platforms like Douyin (owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok) have rapidly grown to form the second-largest book sales channel in China.
Seven of the Top 10 leading publishers in China—129 out of the top 200 publishers—saw more than 10 percent of their sales revenue coming from short-video e-commerce channels in 2023.
