Behind the Scenes at FIL: The Guadalajara International Book Fair

With #FIL2022 right around the corner, we jumped on the opportunity to talk about one of our favorite book fairs of the year.

Of course, we love all book fairs, but there is something very, very special about FIL

Maybe it’s the incredible guests of honor from all over the world…

This year the focus will be on Sharjah, UAE, which “has developed an international reputation for being a centre of knowledge and publishing in the Gulf and had the honour of being the 2019/20 UNESCO World Book Capital.”

Sharjah is a brilliant place to continue business relationships and make new, promising partners.

Or maybe it’s FIL Youth, a space at the fair dedicated specifically to fostering a love of reading and writing with young people.

Pair these special events with the culture, sights, sounds, and food of Guadalajara and you can see why we are disappointed not to make it there in person this year!

DropCap’s rights agents, Allison Olson and Monica Meehan, get a little wistful when they talk about FIL

“What’s not to love about the annual book fair in Guadalajara? We work with incredible partners in the Spanish-speaking world, both in Spain and Latin America, who have translated some of our favorite titles into Spanish over the years.”

“For me, FIL brings back some wonderful memories. Back in 2008, I was able to attend with a teacher from my children’s Spanish immersion program in Minnesota, who attended educational seminars at FIL and was able to fill her school library with thousands of books. Those books are still in circulation at the school library today!”
— Allison Olson

The Discovery of Anime and Manga, by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin, originally published by Immedium Publishing will be translated into Spanish in 2023 by Ediciones Obelisco

As with all book fairs, DropCap’s time there is all about matching books with the right buyers and editors.

Our interactive rights guide makes it easy to pair international book buyers with the titles they are looking for, but there is something special about being able to do it in person, in such a beautiful location.

FIL is not just a book festival, it’s a festival of cultures.

While we won’t be there in person to showcase our titles this year, we are so happy we can remain connected to our buyers through our award-winning translation rights software:

Whether you are heading to FIL 2022 in person or are using our interactive rights guide from your corner of the globe, we hope you will find inspiration and joy in the sights and culture of Guadalajara.
