A Tale of Two Agents: New York City and the Mini Apple

“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.”

— Simone de Beauvoir

“I don't think the real America is in New York or on the Pacific Coast; personally, I like the Middle West much better, places like North and South Dakota, Minneapolis and Saint Paul. There, I think, are the true Americans.”

— Charlie Chaplin

With the great fortune of having offices (otherwise known as our apartments, living rooms, basements, backyards) in two American cities rich with history and strong cultural roots, our roundup showcases the endless talent and energy surrounding us in the world of books. Both New York City and Minneapolis — the "Mini Apple" as it has sometimes been addressed — features daily as the backdrop to our DropCap lives.

Word on the street is that New York is back! And in local bookstores, book buying is definitely buoyant. In the city’s leafy Upper West Side (home to one of your two agents), newcomers like The Strand, an offshoot of the original family-owned and famed 18 miles of books, is almost one year old.

#BookTok

Barnes and Noble, one of only four remaining in the city, has also set up shop uptown and now features a #BookTok section which we will elaborate on next month.

Book | Hampton

And for those summering in the Hamptons, BookHampton continues its 40 year run of independent bookselling and owned by an East Hampton resident who always dreamed of having her own shop.

Wild Rumpus

Meanwhile in Minneapolis / St. Paul, local favorite children's bookstore Wild Rumpus has also reopened for browsing — which was a relief to all of the animals who call this bookstore home, as they were getting lonely without their neighborhood children to play with.

What is the favorite bookstore in your town or city? We’d love to hear from you and see your photos too!

Mini Apple Publishers

In the Mini Apple we work with some of the best publishers and authors in the Twin Cities: Free Spirit, Beaver’s Pond Press, Hadleigh House, North Star Editions, author Paul Soren Petrek, Storm Literary Agency, and an award winning IPPY title for True Crime concerning an unsolved Minnesota murder.
