Why Socialism Struggles
A voice of reason for a nation at an economic crossroads
There are few issues more topical these days than government and the economy. Many political and public figures throw around terms like socialism, fascism, and capitalism without knowing what they mean or defining them for their audience. But understanding these systems and their issues is critical in helping Americans decide what ideas and proposals for action they should and should not support.
In Why Socialism Struggles, economic policy expert Doug Cardell tackles this hotly debated topic with clarity, logic, and evidence. Written in an engaging question-and-answer format, this book breaks down complex economic principles into digestible insights and addresses the most common—and often misunderstood—questions about socialism: What is socialism, really? Why do people keep proposing it? Has it ever worked? Drawing from decades of research, historical examples, and real-world data, Doug explains why socialism consistently leads to inefficiency and the erosion of individual freedoms. Each answer builds toward a powerful argument: Despite its appeal in theory, socialism fails in practice because it misunderstands human behavior, incentives, and the role of prices in coordinating economic activity.
Accessible, respectful, and thought-provoking, Why Socialism Struggles is essential reading for students, curious citizens, and anyone seeking to understand the economic systems that shape our world—and why free markets, for all their imperfections, remain the most effective path to prosperity.

Doug Cardell is a seventh-generation American patriot. His fourth great-grandfather and several other relatives died fighting in the American Revolution. Doug is a veteran of the US Air Force Reserve and the New Mexico National Guard. As such, Doug swore to support and defend the United States like each of the six generations before him. That oath had no expiration date. He believes the biggest threat to the country today is an increasing view that socialism is a viable answer to our problems, and this book is his defense against that threat.
Doug is an economist and economic policy expert. He has served as an aide to a member of Congress, a corporate CEO, and a professor of mathematics. He holds advanced degrees and certificates from the University of Arizona, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Phoenix, as well as a PhD in economic policy from Liberty University. His expertise in economics, from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint, coupled with his expertise in mathematics and modeling, as well as high success as an educator, makes him uniquely qualified to explain economics and evaluate economic systems and ideas.
