Description

India’s economic transformation since 1991 is one of the most remarkable reform stories in the modern world. But how did the country’s financial and banking systems evolve to support this growth?

In Transformation: THREE DECADES OF INDIA'S FINANCIAL AND BANKING SECTOR REFORMS (1991-2021), seasoned central banker Dasarathi Mishra offers an authoritative account of three decades of reforms that reshaped India’s financial architecture. From the 1991 balance-of-payments crisis to the rise of digital payments and fintech, Mishra traces the policy decisions, institutional changes, and regulatory innovations that strengthened the banking sector and enabled economic expansion.

Drawing on decades of experience in banking regulation and financial policy, the author explains complex developments—from banking supervision and credit information systems to infrastructure financing, financial inclusion, and emerging technologies such as central bank digital currency.

Clear, insightful, and comprehensive, this book presents both the achievements and the continuing challenges of India’s financial sector.

An essential guide for policymakers, researchers, bankers, and students, Transformation captures the story of how reforms turned crisis into opportunity—and how India’s financial system continues to evolve in a rapidly changing global economy.
