GOLD DIGGER, The Remarkable Baby Doe Tabor
by Rebecca Rosenberg
A Rags-to-Riches-to-Rags Story of Love, Greed, and Tragedy
In 1878, after Lizzie Doe's family loses everything in a fire, the twenty-year-old is forced to marry and go west to prospect a gold mine. Unaccustomed to such beauty, the miners nickname her Baby Doe after a beautiful deer. But Baby Doe proves herself tougher than they imagine when she finds herself abandoned, pregnant, and working the gold mine alone.
Her pluck gains the admiration of Silver King Horace Tabor, married and twice her age. In Tabor, Baby Doe finds devotion and true passion. But their love is forbidden, and their lives are soon caught up in scandal and economic ruin. Lizzie must make a painful choice: stay with Tabor and risk losing everything, or leave him and save herself.
Baby Doe Tabor was a real-life, deeply complex heroine, rising and falling and rising again with beguiling grit. She was a woman of contradictions: beautiful, charming, and intelligent, but also headstrong, reckless, and obsessive. She was born into poverty, but she married into wealth and privilege. She was a social outcast, but she was also a philanthropist and a patron of the arts.
Gold Digger is the story of Baby Doe Tabor's remarkable life. A story of love, greed, wealth, power, and tragedy. A story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
