2020 Longlist, Millennium Book Award

As presidential elections near, Mexico City attorney Eduardo Cortez Castillo uncovers a scheme between Mexico's Minister of Public Security and a powerful drug cartel to buy the Mexican presidency. He'll follow the money trail deep into drug smuggling territory where the odds of survival are low.

Back in Mexico City, a housemaid who dreams of being an artist faces a painful choice. Try to escape poverty and make a new life alone in the United States. Or believe in Eduardo's promises of a life together despite the huge social gulf between them in status-conscious Mexico.

She doesn't know that her time is running out. Eduardo's enemies are looking for her, too.

This fast-moving political thriller takes you on a riveting ride through Mexico's spiraling drug violence and what it will take to break the rigid class system.

Awards & Endorsements

"Political thriller "The Hidden Light of Mexico City" illuminates the fight for Mexico's future with real characters, passion for the place, and brutal truth pulled from today's headlines. Author Carmen Amato draws on her own experiences living in Mexico and Central America to stake the classic Cinderella story against Mexican government corruption, drug cartel violence and the country's crippled society in this unflinching and intricately plotted novel."

"An intensely exciting political thriller that fires on all cylinders, The Hidden Light Of Mexico City is one of those rare novels that promises much and over-delivers. Both timely and poignant. Amato writes with the authoritative voice of experience and it’s to her credit that her plot stands in contrast to many of today’s thrillers which often seem simple-minded and lacking in genuine depth."
