Deborah Hufford was the publisher of The Writer’s Handbook and is an award-winning writer and magazine editor with credits in The New York Times, Connoisseur, Better Homes & Gardens, Country Home, San Francisco Chronicle, and numerous other national titles. She has a Master’s degree from the University of Iowa where she taught Writer’s Workshop students how to hand-print their work on an old Vandercook press at Iowa’s Center for the Book. She has also taught graduate writing and publishing courses at Northwestern University, Marquette University, and Alverno College. She grew up in Iowa farm country with horses and all kinds of critters and was a rodeo queen. She worked extensively with the Chief Joseph Foundation and Nez Perce elders regarding their culture and Appaloosa programs. Blood to Rubies is her debut novel. After having a heart attack at age 56, then diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure at 66, she had a kidney transplant only weeks after she signed with a publisher. Amazingly, her husband was a match and donated his kidney, after her two sisters volunteered but discovered they had damaged kidneys too. Miracles DO happen.
