A Relationship Guidebook
Why do men and women so often love each other—and still fail to understand each other?
In Understanding the Sexes, Bernard Bushell offers a direct, provocative guide to the forces he believes shape attraction, conflict, partner choice, and long-term commitment. Building on his formula—Ego divided by Security equals Relationship outcome—he argues that men and women frequently enter relationships with different needs, expectations, and measures of success.
Through memorable comparisons, practical examples, and candid advice, Bushell explores the influence of family patterns, the limits of physical attraction, the importance of everyday compatibility, and the warning signs that can predict future trouble. He also considers the habits that help marriages endure: productive conflict, shared values, complementary strengths, sexual connection, forgiveness, and continual investment in the partnership.
Written for singles, engaged couples, and married readers, this compact guide challenges romantic assumptions and encourages a more deliberate approach to choosing—and understanding—a life partner. Whether readers agree with every conclusion or not, Understanding the Sexes invites honest conversation about what each partner needs and what lasting commitment demands.
Author

Bernard Bushell
Bernard Bushell is a former public relations professional and a graduate of Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. His experience working with thousands of women during careers in real estate and retailing helped shape his observations about relationships, communication, and the differing expectations men and women may bring to partnership.
He is also the author of The Formula: How I Found It and What It Can Do for You, in which he introduced the relationship equation “E over S equals R”—Ego divided by Security equals Relationship outcome.
In Understanding the Sexes, Bushell expands that framework into a practical guide to partner selection, compatibility, conflict, intimacy, and long-term commitment. His work is written for readers seeking a candid, accessible perspective on why relationships succeed, why they fail, and how couples can better understand one another.
