May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope.
— Emily Brontë

Publishing Graduate Spotlight

Our wonderful intern and recent New York publishing program alum Gabriella Straker talks about her experience.

"My publishing career began in a library, years before I realized it. I grew up in Miami-Dade County in South Florida, with a single mother that prioritized weekly trips after school, rain or shine. Whether I was roaming aisles, playing checkers, or watching librarians work, I was enthralled by the atmosphere, and of course, the books. The more I read, the more I wanted to understand how ideas could become novels and stories, which led me to the City College of New York and their Publishing Certificate Program.

Without CCNY, I never would have found my way to DropCap, my first publishing internship and introduction to the industry. Working alongside this team has reaffirmed the idea that accessibility and obtainability are incredibly important, as these individuals endlessly strive to get stories into as many hands as possible. Having the opportunity to help with book fair selections, research clients, and sit in on meetings are things I am forever grateful for, and this opportunity has become an integral part of the career I hope to continue establishing." — Gabriella
