Essays on the Human Heart
What happens when a faith you understand intellectually is tested by the realities of life?
During a difficult season marked by fractured relationships, uncertainty, and spiritual struggle, Clifton Loo turned to his journal—and to Scripture. The reflections that emerged became Presence, a candid collection of essays about the restless human heart and its deepest need: the presence of God.
Drawing on personal experience, biblical teaching, theology, psychology, philosophy, and everyday observations, Loo explores questions that confront believers in ordinary life. Why do our desires so easily become idols? How should Christians understand temptation, forgiveness, codependency, love, suffering, and spiritual warfare? And how can familiar passages of Scripture move from abstract ideas to living truth?
Written not as a theologian addressing a classroom but as one believer “preaching to himself,” these essays invite readers to examine the assumptions and passions that shape their lives.
For Christians wrestling with faith amid the pressures of the modern world—and for seekers curious about the Christian worldview—Presence offers an intimate invitation to look beyond temporary satisfactions and rediscover the One who truly satisfies.

Clifton Loo
Clifton Loo, PhD, is a writer and ordained elder whose intellectual and spiritual journey has crossed the worlds of economics, public health, and Christian faith. Raised in an agnostic home, he became a Christian in his early twenties, beginning a lifelong study of Scripture and theology. His scholarly work includes published research in macroeconomics, monetary policy, and public health. In Presence: Essays on the Human Heart, Loo brings that analytical perspective to deeply personal questions of faith, relationships, temptation, suffering, and spiritual growth. Drawing on journal reflections written during a challenging period of his life, he explores how biblical truths become vividly meaningful when tested by lived experience.
