Description

A Psychologist-Endorsed Story About Divorce, Separation, and Finding Home Again

Five siblings. One broken nest. Many BIG feelings.

When a mighty storm causes the Bird family's nest to fall apart, five young birds must learn to live in two homes instead of one.

Blue Bird misses what used to be.
Grey Bird has endless questions.
Red Bird's anger feels too big to hold.
Yellow Bird worries about what comes next.
Green Bird quietly wonders if somehow it's all his fault.

With the gentle wisdom of Wise Old Bear, each bird is met right where they are. One by one, they discover that every feeling belongs, that love doesn't disappear when a family changes shape, and that home is more than just a place.

Written with warmth and honesty, One Nest or Two helps children experiencing divorce, separation, or family change feel seen, understood, and less alone, and gives parents, grandparents, counsellors, teachers, psychologists, and school wellbeing staff a gentle way into conversations that can otherwise feel hard to start.

Psychologist-endorsed and written for children ages 4–10, this heartfelt picture book supports emotional literacy, resilience, and hope, while reminding every child of one important truth:

"A family is still a family... whether one nest or two."

"This book goes straight to the heart of what many children experience when going through a change in the family, such as family separation or breakdown. Karen has delicately, yet boldly, described the different expressions of hurt and confusion children experience. The book demonstrates and models ways for children to reframe their experience and find new ways to view the situation, drawing on concepts of acceptance and healthy support-seeking. Professionals will find this an incredibly useful tool and talking point to support children."
— Rachel McGregor, Psychologist
