Description

Clint Black needs 100 pork chops on a stick to go ASAP. Rascal Flatts wants 34 pizzas. Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead decides he must have Lobster Thermidor at midnight. Welcome to Lobsters at Midnight and Other Confessions of a Backstage Caterer, which serves up an All-Access pass into Kathy Westbrook’s 37-year career as owner of “Eat Your Heart Out Catering,” based in Minneapolis, catering for theaters and festivals in the Midwest. Part memoir, part celebrity tell-all, and part cookbook, with recipes from stars included. From Miles Davis to Marilyn Manson, Westbrook did it all; part chef, part problem-solver, part crisis negotiator and nursemaid. This is the story of a girl who grew up in a Minneapolis suburb in the 1960s and became a caterer to the rock stars whose music first reached her through her pink transistor radio. And “catering” here means precisely that: catering to a star’s every whim: condoms for Mötley Crüe, underwear and socks for Chris Isaak, a bottle of white wine for Gregg Allman, and rolling papers for too many artists to count. Kitty’s life has been one long night of being caught between a rock star and a hard place

My lifelong ambition is to tell stories about the times I’ve lived in and my crazy adventures. It took decades to get there, but I’ve been busy. For the past thirty-seven years, I was the driving force behind my company, Eat Your Heart Out Catering, Inc., whose business was focused exclusively on catering backstage for concerts and music festivals, feeding the bands whose music has always influenced my life. You can name any band, and it’s a strong bet I have spent a day with them and their crew.

In the summer, I reside in a Minneapolis suburb, and in the winter, I head south of the border to Alamos, Sonora, Mexico, to a small Spanish colonial Pueblo Mágico. My passion for food consists of eating, preparing, and growing it. In Mexico, I have a big vegetable garden and tropical fruit-bearing trees. I love to pick fresh veggies and herbs, to make fabulous salads and vegetarian dishes that I share with my friends on my portal overlooking Mount Alamos. In Minneapolis, I grow my own veggies and flowers. A squash blossom flower about to turn into a zucchini brings me joy.

I love to entertain, set a table, invent a recipe, and create a funky down-home atmosphere. I love to dance, listen to music, laugh, and share a good story, accompanied by a great meal and always, dessert.

I live with my British husband, photographer Paul Westbrook, and our two Mexican rescue dogs, Henrietta and Esmeralda. My love of dogs is a central theme in my life. I enjoy traveling to off-the-beaten-path locales and love nothing better than to land in the middle of nowhere.
