Description

"Extremely well researched and beautifully written, Josie Olsvig's novel Freedom's Tears will haunt you for years to come." -Kim Poovey, author of Shadows of the Moss and other Southern novels Author Josie Olsvig transports the reader to a tumultuous time in American history, the mid-1800s in Charleston, South Carolina, neighboring Beaufort, and the surrounding Sea Islands. As the story unfolds, White aristocratic planters, determined to protect their tremendous wealth and rights as slaveholders, seek to form a separate nation. Walk the halls of the Citadel Military Academy where the sons of secessionists prepare to defend their "way of life" from the invading forces of the North. Listen to the steamy rhetoric of local plantation owners and their spouses under the influence of segregationists John C. Calhoun and newspaper publisher Robert Barnwell Rhett. Climb aboard the Union armada sent to block the flow of military goods from Europe to the Confederacy. Witness the liberation of over ten thousand enslaved workers, who later become known as "contrabands of war," and the Union Army's struggle to protect and assist the now liberated enslaved workers. This riveting historical novel has a compendium of the key players in the war and is filled with previously unknown facts, illustrations, and photographs.

"A gripping historical treasure trove of a story for those who thought they knew about the Civil War. Freedom's Tears pulls you into . . . a plantation community of enslaved people in South Carolina as history lands on their doorstep and the war reverberates through their lives. Rich in detail, grounded in real events, this sweeping landscape of what took place in the heart of the South during this time is vividly portrayed. A riveting read!"-Leslie K Simmons, author of Red Clay, Running Waters "Captivating historical fiction! Olsvig writes with passion and empathic authenticity. Her words poignantly capture the emotional nuances her characters would have experienced in the situations she portrays. The accuracy of her historical references and terminology withstands scholarly scrutiny and conveys a deep understanding of the time of which she writes."-Richard E Thomas, founder and president, Legacy Leadership, LLC; chairman, History Department, Heritage Library; lecturer, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute-USCB; author of Backwater Frontier: Beaufort County, South Carolina, at the Forefront of American History "As a historical fiction novel, Freedom's Tears is both vivid and gut-wrenchingly accurate. From the climate-setting background to the Civil War through Emancipation Day, Josie Olsvig paints a picture of abducted Africans few dare approach, and many would like to forget. 'One should remember, at this point in history, the Republicans were liberal and anti-slavery, while most Southern Democrats, or what later became known as Dixiecrats, were conservative and pro-slavery.' Was it cotton, or was it greed? The reader will have to decide as they unpack this unvarnished study of slavery's marrow during one of the most divisive periods of American history."-Riccoh Player, CEO and founder, Parade Deck; retired base commander, Parris Island Marine Base "Go grab your personal copy TODAY of an extraordinary historical fiction book by my friend and fellow author Josie Olsvig. Her latest novel, Freedom's Tears, is a compelling story set during the Civil War and eventual emancipation that will literally keep you on the edge of your seat. Let the pages of this award-winning novel draw you into a very chaotic and complex period in our nation's history."-Greg Estevez, president, Hutchinson Heritage Foundation; Edisto Island author, historian, and genealogist

Josie Olsvig

Josie Olsvig is a Southern author who lives in the Sea Islands of South Carolina in the town of Beaufort. Before commencing her writing life, Josie was an attorney and social worker who spent her career addressing child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Her call to service was spurred by early life experiences growing up in poverty in the inner city with hardship, strife, and violence. Josie worked for over thirty years as a public servant and advocate. In the twilight of her career, Josie chose to serve on a statewide committee to combat human trafficking in her home state of Ohio. This professional background has served her well in her current pursuits. Her first book, Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry, is a children's picture book about the Gullah culture, heirs' property, and the history of Charleston. Gullah Tears was Josie's debut historical fiction novel; Freedom's Tears is the second novel in the series.
