Description

In his gripping, surprising, and wildly entertaining new memoir, Fred North tells the incredible true story of how he became the most famous film stunt helicopter pilot in the world.

As a young, misunderstood boy, Fred North was never a fan of the rules. Then, on an unremarkable day in 1969, a helicopter touched down in his hometown of Saint-Louis, Senegal, and turned his world upside down. Fifty years later, he's Hollywood's go-to stunt pilot with a world altitude record and over two hundred film credits to his name, including Inception, James Bond: Spectre, and Fast X. But a lot of incredible things happened in between.

Flying Sideways tells the thrilling but heartfelt story of how a misfit boy with nothing but a dream breaks the rules, beats the odds, and learns to bet on himself. Against a vibrant global backdrop that touches down everywhere from New York City to Mongolia to Madagascar, we follow Fred as he deserts the French Army (in roller skates), talks his way into flight school, becomes chief pilot for the world's greatest rally car and adventures races, gets mixed up with DEA in Miami, dodges death (many times), and―perhaps most improbably―falls in love.

Flying Sideways is a nonstop thrill ride, reminding us that the most dangerous thing we can do with life is give up on it.

Review
"Stunt pilot Fred North teams up with his wife and stunt coordinator, Peggy, for a high-octane debut memoir. A child of French parents in Senegal, Fred struggled in school and strained to impress his father as a young boy. After a chance opportunity to ride in a helicopter with his geography teacher, he fell in love with the experience of flying (“It is as though I’m meeting myself for the first time,” he writes) and grew determined to become a pilot. By the time he was 24, Fred had ditched the French army to earn his pilot’s license and, after working as an aerial photographer for off-road races, became a stunt pilot for Hollywood films. The juiciest bits of the narrative include Fred’s adventures on the sets of films including Fantastic Four,The Incredible Hulk, and Seven Years In Tibet. Throughout, his enthusiasm is galvanizing, though some of his testosterone-fueled asides (one of his heroes “pisses adrenaline”) can teeter into arrogance. Thankfully, Peggy’s voice balances things out, as when she applies to become Fred’s stunt coordinator on their first meeting and insists she’s “probably too qualified” for the job. It’s a rush." --Publisher's Weekly

“Fred North is the best . . . stunt helicopter pilot on the planet. If you want the impossible shot for your film, call Fred. Fred’s book is laced with the same casual cool and pulse-quickening adrenaline as his world class flying. A heartfelt account of a man in search of himself finding meaning in the impossible and a home in the sky.” --Sam Hargrave, Director (Extraction 2)

“Flying Sideways is a captivating memoir, one that covers its author's personal and professional journey to the top of his game and the heights of our industry. In a voice that is as authentic and straightforward as Fred himself, this book hooks you in from its very first pages, sharing compelling details and nuance as it chronicles Fred’s unlikely and inspiring path to becoming one of the best there’s ever been.” --Shawn Levy, Director and Producer (Night of the Museum, Stranger Things, Free Guy, The Adam Project)

Acclaimed stunt film pilot, Fred North was born in Tunisia in 1961 to French expat parents and began his journey to becoming a pilot at eight years old, the very second he saw and set foot in a helicopter. From the jungles of Costa Rica and Madagascar to the Eurasian Steppe and the Swiss Alps, Fred has flown in some of the world’s most perilous and demanding conditions, serving as Camera Helicopter Pilot and Chief Pilot for world renowned rally car races such as “Paris-Dakar” and “Paris-Moscow-Beijing” and as coordinator for the famous sport trek, “Raid Gauloises.” At 41, determined to use his skills as a pilot and his natural eye for the camera to tell stories, Fred moved to Los Angeles, making the transition to from “pilot who films” to Film Pilot.
