Must read 🏆 *****

Thrilling mystery about growing up, solving a mystery, and adjusting to a new home.

Synopsis

The British school in Kyoto, Japan has a problem--several problems, in fact. A ghost is haunting the halls after hours, a star student has disappeared, and the grounds are covered in secretive symbols. The protagonists, Jessica and Kenta, form an unlikely friendship as they seek to uncover the truth behind these problems, starting with the school's supposedly cursed museum exhibit of a koto, a Japanese musical instrument. They get into a world of trouble and eventually discover dark secrets about the school's past. Or is it really the curse of the koto?

A Curse in Kyoto is the best crime story I've read in months. The style is gripping, and until the protagonists unraveled the mystery, I was genuinely spooked by the ghost scenes! Like the other students, I was half convinced that the curse was real and supernatural elements were afoot. Despite these ghost scenes and the superstitious "cursed koto," this book is classified as a crime story, as human vengeance, greed, and rebellion are the scariest underpinnings of the story.

I was turning the pages well into the night, not just because of the constant action and excitement, but because the writing style was elegant and accessible. The prose was clear and the dialogue was realistic. Cullen did an excellent job developing his characters. Both protagonists have grown at the end of the story and have a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

One aspect of this story that I really loved was the setting. I don't see many crime stories set in Japan, and the author is clearly familiar with the social customs and culture of Japan and even the city of Kyoto. The book is interesting but not overtly educational and beautiful without the all-too-familiar Eurocentric fetishization of Asian culture. Cullen also knows enough about the culture to critique some societal aspects and paint a vivid picture of our protagonists' lives in Kyoto.

For this reason, I believe A Curse in Kyoto is a must-read. There is mild profanity and violence, but it is not a horror story, so the squeamish reader will enjoy it as well. Anyone who is interested in Japanese culture, thrillers, mysteries, and realistic characters will love this book. Just block off a good amount of time to read, because you won't be able to put it down!

S.J. Cullen

S.J. Cullen has never murdered anyone, nor has he ever solved a real-life crime. He has, however, been an international schoolteacher in Asia, so his stories about Hunter and Higashi, a crime-solving duo who attend a British school in Japan, are not completely pulled out of thin air.
