Description

When farmer Harold wakes to find his wife dead beside him in bed and snow threatening to crush the last life from his dwindling farm, he takes drastic steps toward a fresh start. Set in a world of stark wintry beauty, Forty Acres Deep is the brief, unrelenting tale of one person's attempt to make sense of a world he no longer recognizes while pitilessly calling himself into account. Seamed with grim humor and earthy revelations, it is an unforgiving story...and yet leaves open the idea that we might surrender to hope.

Review
What a powerful image you put on paper. Bits and pieces remind me of my husband and his anger. Bits and pieces remind me of my own, and how some days I want to just get in my car and drive to someplace I will never be found. But someplace I can find myself. Society as a whole has failed so many of us. Divorce. The almighty dollar. Scraping out your little piece of the American pie, and being in debt up to your ears. Family members who don't talk to one another, and chasms growing wider every year. Angry at the world. Angry at yourself. Angry at God. Going to church anyway and praying for peace in your heart. Your book dredged up a lot of sleeping anger and angst and things I can't explain. But it was a great book. A great read. I will share my copy with my bookworm friends who I know will appreciate the frankness, and who will see familiar faces in between the lines.

This book also opened my eyes to the pain of others. And I hope it makes me a better person for having read it. A kinder, gentler person.

"Because of its serious tone and content, many have called
Forty Acres Deep a departure for the self-described humorist. But Perry's humor always hits so squarely because we recognize the ache at its core — particularly when it comes to the complex rural characters he lives among and writes about. In that sense, despite this being a work of fiction, Perry is telling just as much brutal truth — if not more — as he does in any of his nonfiction work." - Maggie Ginsberg, Madison Magazine

"The opening chapter of this book hits you like a 300 pound defensive lineman. A literary decleater. If you grew up on a farm...you'...
