What Ultimately Is There?... And Other Foundational Questions
by Stephen Wolfram
What is time?
What is consciousness?
Why does the universe exist?
Decades of foundational work in science and technology have led Stephen Wolfram to tackle some of humanity's oldest philosophical questions—and to argue that it is now possible to arrive at answers long thought beyond the reach of meaningful progress.
These lively and engaging essays cover topics from timeless philosophical questions to artificial intelligence and the future of the human condition. Along the way, Wolfram makes a host of complex ideas understandable while challenging readers to rethink long-held assumptions.
The book takes a fresh look at foundational concepts such as time, motion, free will, the nature of minds, mathematical truth—and what ultimately is there—all from new perspectives opened by recent advances in basic science.

Stephen Wolfram
Stephen Wolfram is a scientist, language designer, software architect, business leader, author and educator. He is the creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language, and the author of A New Kind of Science and other books. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and received his PhD in physics from Caltech in 1979 (at the age of 20). He founded Wolfram Research in 1987, and has been its CEO ever since. After an early academic career in physics and cosmology, Wolfram began his long-term project to define a new direction in science based on the computational paradigm. His work in basic science has had broad influence not only in science, but also in technology, philosophy and the arts. Wolfram's technological creations have been the basis for countless inventions and discoveries over the course of several decades, and are used by millions of people around the world every day.
