Description

In 1907, reports of the Azusa Street Revival reached a small group of women in Washington, DC—and ignited a movement in the nation’s capital.

From modest house meetings and a struggling waterfront mission near the city morgue, Full Gospel Assembly grew into one of the East Coast’s most influential Pentecostal congregations. Under the visionary leadership of federal employee-turned-pastor Harry Lee Collier, the church welcomed women preachers, missionaries, prominent evangelists, and worshippers from varied backgrounds while maintaining a fiercely independent identity.

Drawing on newspapers, correspondence, church publications, oral histories, archival records, and personal writings, Donald W. Kammer reconstructs the remarkable story of a congregation that flourished despite ridicule, hostile press coverage, denominational tensions, and the hardships of the Great Depression.

The Full Gospel Assembly of Washington, DC, 1907–1934 restores an overlooked chapter of American religious history. It reveals how spiritual conviction, adaptability, compassion, and courageous leadership enabled an unconventional community to challenge stereotypes and leave a lasting mark on Pentecostalism in the capital and beyond.
