Biography

I have been threading needles since I was 3 years old and learning about the Underground railroad. We sat listing to stories from my family as long as I can remember. I visited and sat with the women sewing, weaving & crafting just that long. Children don’t have or play with paper dolls any longer, but we made our dolls too. We were taught to sew silk pillows and to quilt by my great grandmother Irene, my grandmothers Mary Eva and Louise, great aunts Sarah and Ozella, and my aunt Viola. I am a hand quilter and the last of the basket weavers in my family.

In 1999, we journeyed with my parents, the late Dr. Howard and Serena (Strother) Wilson with my youngest 3 children, Kir, Calvin and Tanisha. We started from Sullivan Island South Carolina and traveled to the Nathaniel Dett Chapel in Canada where our families Underground Railroad Quilt Code path ends. We journaled, photographed, and videotaped stopping at UGRR stations and interviewed historians at each stop all along the way. They passed the Quilt Codes down to my children so it will continue to the next generations.
