James Edward Cleland
Biography
James Edward Cleland is an educator, writer, and lifelong advocate for the integration of art, architecture, and design in education. Over a 38-year teaching career, he worked at both elementary and secondary levels in Chicago, including Notre Dame de Chicago Academy and Loyola Academy, where he helped develop innovative curricula in architecture and design.
A graduate of Loyola University Chicago, Cleland earned degrees in studio art and curriculum and instruction. His teaching philosophy blends classical educational traditions with experiential, student-centered learning.
His first book, The Silent Sentinel, received the Pinnacle Award for History. In My Life in the Classroom and Studio, Cleland reflects on the mentors, students, and experiences that shaped his approach to teaching and his enduring passion for architecture.
